7:30 a.m. I quietly shuffled into Beckett’s room; I was careful as I walked past the rooms which held his two sleeping sisters. His room was dark on this cool fall day; the light of the sun hadn’t filled his windows yet. I scooped his swaddled self up and pulled his face close to mine. After his eyes fluttered awake, he squinted at me and then, he grinned.
If you’re a parent, you know well that heart swelling that accompanies your baby’s toothless smiles. You know the choking that rises up in your throat and the immediate stretching of your own cheeks into a smiley response. If you’re not a parent, keep reading; let’s talk about your Abba Father.
For the LORD your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. (Zephaniah 3:17a)
I delight in the smile of my son, my child. I am so gladdened by his tiny offering of love. And, do you know something? To me, that one-dimpled grin doesn’t even seem a tiny offering because I know it’s all he can give. I delight in him simply recognizing his momma’s presence beside his crib. I smile because he knows me and notices me. He notices me.
He notices your smile, child of the Heavenly Abba Father. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs. (Zephaniah 3:17b) Just as this young momma loves to hold her chunky baby boy, being strong where he is weak, simply smiling because he sees me, My Abba delights when I just notice His presence, know He is there.
May the LORD smile on you and be gracious to you. (Numbers 6:25 NLT)
