4 Things My Children Teach Me about Father God

1. He says, “I love you,” many times in many ways each day and never tires of hearing us echo back.

2. He’s not in a hurry.

 3. People matter more than tasks.

 4. The Father’s arms & heart are trustworthy.

Last night we had a friend over for dinner, Beckett is in that phase in which he is convinced the best place to be is momma’s arms (99% of that time that is just fine with this momma—he’ll be off and running soon enough).  He has gone from smiling at everyone to reserving his smiles for those he knows and squeezing me tightly when a new face is present.  Since I was trying to finish preparing dinner, I handed Beckett off to his daddy.  As Beckett kept his eyes on that new face who was playing with his sisters, he laid his head on Daddy’s shoulder and wrapped his chubby arm around Mark’s strong one and rested.  There is something gorgeous about a child in his daddy’s strong arms—the child always looks smaller than before.  Beckett knew he could trust those arms even if he was unsure of what was happening outside of Daddy’s grip.  What was happening outside of His Father’s arms didn’t really matter as long as he stayed put.

Momma, your Abba Father is saying I love you over and over throughout your day—do you notice it?  Those smiles on your children’s’ faces, the food in your refrigerator, the husband who makes you laugh, the friend you can text anytime, the hope in the middle of the messes—He’s smitten with you and is shouting it from the roof tops.  Even if you don’t notice today, fear not, He is patient.  He isn’t quick to anger or give up on us, and is comfortable with the slow steady progress (or the 2 steps forward 1 step back) we are making in our walk following Jesus.  Know that He isn’t bothered by your laundry piles or crumb laden kitchen floors, He sees you are working to shepherd tiny hearts.  And, please, let’s learn from our children who trust the parent’s arms—it doesn’t matter what is happening outside of His arms as long as you stay tucked inside them.

My prayer for  you today is that these lessons will find a deep place in your heart to dwell, and that as you watch your precious, spunky, exhausting littles today you also will learn some lessons about your Father God. What do your children teach you? Share on Facebook.
